Your Child's Baptism at All Saints

To have your child baptised at All Saints, you need to live in the parish or be a member of the congregation, or have a strong family link to the Church.

You need also to be clear as to your own Christian faith and committed to bringing up your child within the Christian family - the Church.

Baptisms take place on the second Sunday in the month at the 11.00 am Morning Prayer Service. The service is modern language and lasts about an hour.

Baptisms can also take place on most Sunday evenings at the 6.30 pm evening service. Baptisms in the evening may include Holy Communion.

To arrange a Baptism for your child, you need to contact the Vicar in plenty of time prior to the event. This is because we do not do more than two Baptisms at any one service. So, before inviting relatives and friends, check with the Vicar that your date is available.

Once we have notice of your interest in Baptism, we will ask you to fill in a form with your child's and your details, along with details of the proposed Godparents - usually 3; 2 men and I woman for a boy and 2 women and I man for a girl.

On return of the form, the Vicar will arrange to visit you at home to discuss Baptism and your arrangements. You will also receive a booklet about Baptism in the Anglican Church and leaflets for the Godparents.

HERE ARE SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q

One of the child's parents has not been baptised, does this matter?

A

No so long as the unbaptised person is willing to allow the child to be brought up in the Christian Faith within the Church of England.

Q Do the Godparents need to be baptised Christians?

A

Yes, because it is their responsibility to bring up the child in the Christian faith in partnership with the parents.

Q Do the parents and Godparents have to say anything in the service?

A

Yes, they have to declare their faith in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. They have to commit themselves to following Christ and renouncing evil.

Q I was not baptised as a child and would like to be baptised with my child. Is this possible?

A

Yes, we can baptise you both at the same time.

Q At what age should I bring my child to baptism?

A

A person can be baptised at any age. The most important thing is your faith. In the case of a young person, or adult, they will be expected to make a declaration of faith for themselves.
